One of the joys of a trip to Provence is a visit to the colourful markets that take place all around the region. Food markets are often held daily in many towns. Experience wonderfully fragrant places selling tempting regional produce from super-fresh vegetables and fruit to olives, honey and herbs de provence. Then there are the more general markets selling an assortment of different handicrafts such as colourful fabrics, perfumed soaps and locally made ceramics. The markets are usually held weekly. You will never tire of poking around looking at the work from the local artisans.

My two favourite markets are the ones in Aix and St Remy. The main market in Aix takes place around the Place des Precheurs and Place de Verdun on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. It gets very crowded on market day mornings, but Bellegarde car park, on the northern side of Aix’s equivalent of the north circular is usually a good bet. It’s just a short walk from there.
Market day is Wednesday in St Remy, and it’s worth a visit. The market sprawls through the older part of town, but the main part is just behind the Church in front of the town hall. I can’t help you on the parking front in St Remy – you’ll just have to take your chances. But it’s certainly worth the effort! Boutique Provencale is an online gift shop specializing in goods from the South of France.
A walk through one of these markets will enthrall your senses, you will see a kaleidoscope of color, unique handmade items, and enjoy the aromas of local foods. Miss a market on your trip and you have missed one of the best parts of Provence!
